When importing goods there are many rules and regulations to follow.
In accordance with the Law of the General Taxes of Import and Export, the following products are prohibited for the import: Alive predator fish, in their states of young fish, youthful and adult; turtle eggs or any class; poppy seeds and flour of poppy seeds; seeds and spores of marijuana; juice and extracts of opium, prepared to smoke; extracts and juice derived from marijuana, also mucilage condensed products derived from the marijuana; thallium sulfate; insecticide; heroin, base or hydrochloride of diacetylmorphine; goods that have been declared as archaeological monuments by the Secretariat of Public Education.
The basic Mexican import document is the "pedimiento de importacion". This document must be accompanied by a commercial invoice, a bill of lading, and documents demonstrating guarantee of payment of additional duties for undervalued goods if applicable. Also the Packing list must always accompany the shipment. The information shown on the packing list must support the description on the commercial invoice. This guaranties strict control, allows for the identification of the complete shipment at any point, and provides a basis for registering complaints with insurance agencies should the merchandise be damaged or missing.
Six copies of the packing list must be issued by the exporter to the transport agency. The packing list must include: description of merchandise, value of merchandise, weight and volume.
Duties and Taxations: TAX: There is a 10 percent value added tax assessed to products going to the northern Mexico border region, and a 15 percent value added tax assessed on products going elsewhere in the country. In addition, there is a 0.8 percent customs processing fee for products that do not qualify for NAFTA preferential tariff treatment. Tax is applied on CIF + duty.
Labeling requirements for beverage alcohol products are outlined in Mexican regulation NOM-142-SSA1-1995. Labels must include the following information, in Spanish: name/brand name of the product, type of product, net content, country of origin, name/company name and address of the importer, alcohol content, lot number, warning statement, beverages that contain aspartame. |
