Import Regulations in Kuwait

The Department of Standards and Meteorology at the Public Authority for Industry has drawn up about 300 Kuwaiti standards. And they are currently in force. These have been based on a combination of British, American, German and other national standards modified to suit Kuwait's needs. Moreover, Kuwait has adopted a number of import regulations to conform to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) standards. 

Prohibited Goods: the importation of pork, pork products, alcoholic beverages, products containing alcoholic beverages, gambling machines, and pornographic materials.

Required Documents
To clear goods imported into Kuwait, a minimum of four documents are needed: (a) Commercial Invoice, (b) Certificate of Origin, (c) Official Delivery Order, and (d) Packing List.

Taxation and Import duties: Tariffs are based on the Harmonised International System (HIS) Code for classification of imports and exports.

Household and personal effects, perfume and tobacco may be imported without duty.
A duty of 4% may apply to some items.

For all other imports, duties are charged ad valorem on the cost, insurance, freight (cif) value.

Commercial samples and Temporary Imports
Samples of value under KD100 are admitted duty free. Other samples attract duty which is refunded upon re-exportation.

Labelling and Packaging Regulations
All imported goods must be labelled with the country of origin. Foodstuffs should have Arabic or Arabic/English labels and carry the following information: name of manufacturer, brand name of food product, name of food product, composition, net and gross weight and, production and expiry dates.
