Before planning import shipment to Jordan it is recommended to first check with the customs authorities or local shipping agents for possible prohibited items. In order to avoid and/or minimize duties/taxes/fees, it could be useful to check if the exporting country has any preferential trade agreement with Jordan that waives or reduces the duties/taxes/fees upon importation.
The government has prohibited importation of plastic waste, drugs hallucinatory items and narcotic plants, explosive, flammable and other hazardous and radioactive items, diesel passenger cars, immoral and indecent materials, live animals. Moreover, items of any nature or packing which is considered to be hazardous to employees or that might contaminate or cause damage to the other items. Also it is prohibited to import any coins, securities, bank notes, papers of value to bearer, travel checks, platinum, gold or silver whether wrought or unwrought, precious stones or any other valuable items. And finally it is prohibited to include inside mail parcels any documents of personal correspondence nature that are exchanged between the sender and addressee.
The following is a list of the documents that may be requested by customs in order for the imported product to be released: Commercial invoice, Bill of lading/airway bill, Certificate of origin, Special certificates, Declaration of value and an exit permit for goods warehoused in free zones. Some products require an import license.
Jordan's simple average applied tariff is approximately 13 %, with a maximum rate of 180 % on certain agricultural products. Tariffs between the United States and Jordan are being eliminated as per the terms of the FTA. The Jordan General Sales Tax law allows the government to impose a "Special Tax" at the time of importation or local production. Alcohol and tobacco are taxed on a scale from 50 to 180%. Imports of raw materials and machinery for the production of capital equipment as well as basic foodstuffs are exempted from Customs tax.
The packing, marking and labeling requirements are issued by the Jordan Institute of Standards and Metrology and relevant government ministries. These requirements are in accordance with the World Trade Organization directives and they vary from one product to another. Importers are responsible for informing suppliers of packaging, marking and labelling requirements.
Marking on boxes or crates has to be directly on the box or crates and should be in ink or painted and not on removable tags or labels. The date of manufacture and expiration has to be embossed or printed on imported canned and preserved foodstuffs. Contents of pharmaceuticals products must be clearly printed on the label. Pesticide information labels must be in Arabic. Brands, trademarks or copyrights are protected by Intellectual Property Right laws. Local business people may only import products that comply with the labelling and marking requirements issued by the Department of Standards and Specifications and other responsible government ministries. |
