Import license was called off in Benin. But still, customs declaration is required. Imported products have to be inspected on quantity, price and quality.
Domiciliation is required for all import operations. Products exported to Benin must satisfy the international standard requirements. They have to be labeled in French, marked and appropriately packed.
Prohibited Items: products that affect public morality, the country's economy, the health and life of citizens, nature and culture.
Documentation: commercial invoice (2 copies), certificate of origin (2 copies), packing list, bill of lading, pro forma invoice (2 copies).
Import Duties and Taxes: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% or 20% on the CIF value.
Products from UMEOA countries are exempted from customs duties but they are imposed with fiscal taxes and other specific taxes. Oil items and other food products are subject to a reduced specific tax. Products from the European Union and the franc zone countries may be import duty free.
Importers of pharmaceuticals, school or public items pay less taxes.
Preferential duties exist between Benin and the UEMOA countries, the ACP countries, the Council of the Entente countries, the ECOWAS countries.
An extra tax of 15% is applied to all items from the ECOWAS countries.
Labelling There are no specific regulations of import except for cigarettes, tobacco and matches. Some products require information on origin and preserves or semi-preserves, also the date of production have to be indicated on labels. |
