Generally, officially there are no non-tariff barriers for U.S. companies entering the Austrian market. But there were cases of certain barriers for a couple of U.S. industry sectors.
Certain products are subject to tariff-rate quotas: after a certain quantity of the product has entered the EU at a low duty rate or duty-free, the rate is raised. These are products determined to be useful to the country's economy only in small quantities (as usual, raw materials or parts). The most important tariff quotas for manufactured products are on chemical substances and electronic devices. Both are administered first-served licensing basis.
Prohibited and Restricted Imports: atlantic red tuna fish (Thunnus Thynnus) imported from Belize, Panama, and Honduras; toys and games containing copper sulfate; products having a flexible metal blade entirely contained in a plastic or paper; illicit narcotics and drugs; bonsai plants, citrus plants and grapevines; all forms of asbestos fibers; L-trytophane and any items having L-trytophane in the composition; rubber erasers that look like foodstuff; medical thermometers containing mercury; a number of U.S. beef hormones.
Import Documentation: customs declaration, commercial invoice (2 copies), certificate of country of origin, the airway bill (bill of lading). Licenses and different certificates (e.g. phytosanitary and veterinary certificates) must be presented upon importation of specific goods.
Import Tariffs Average EU import duty is about 4%, and about 60% of products can be imported into the EU duty-free. Austrian customs tariffs are grounded on TARIC, the EU's integrated tariff. Imported products produced outside the EU can be exempt from certain tariffs.
Labeling Requirements A number of goods imported into Austria are subject to specific marking and labeling regulations. Labels of some imported goods must indicate composition, content and, in some cases, country. It is chiefly wine, textiles (apparel) (washing instructions and information on the type of textile fabric), shoes, detergents and other household chemical products which, have to comply with labelling and marking requirements. |
